The NewFord F-150 Lightning in Salisbury, NC
The F-150 has been a longtime pickup in Ford's lineup, as well as a consistent leader in capabilities and performance. Ford is adding a new option for truck buyers, and it's a good choice if you're an eco-conscious buyer or looking to lessen your fuel usage.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The Ford F-150 Lightning is an all-new electric pickup truck for the model year, although it looks similar to the gas-powered F-150 from the outside. So far, Ford has announced the release of four trim levels: Pro, XLT, Lariat, and Platinum. Standard exterior equipment includes pre-wired trailer connections, large and sturdy wheels, and an oversized front grille with bold lighting. The truck will also be available with options like power running boards, upgraded LED lights, in-bed lighting, and fog lights.
Engine (Power)
All Ford F-150 Lightning trim levels will come with dual electric motors paired with a battery pack that supplies the power. If you opt for the standard-range battery, the combined output of the powertrain comes in at 426 horsepower. With the extended-range battery, the combined output increases to 563 horsepower. The estimated torque output comes in at an impressive 775 pound-feet. Ford also shared plans to release a bed-mounted range extender motor that can provide a charge between charging stations.
Performance
Ford doesn't skimp when it comes to power and performance of its truck line, and the F-150 Lightning is no exception. Although it's all-electric, it can still tow an impressive 10,000 pounds when properly equipped. This model can also haul up to 2,000 pounds of payload. Several years before its release, Ford launched a campaign to show the truck towing a line of train cars, each carrying an F-150 pickup truck.
According to early reports, the standard-range battery can drive up to 230 miles on a single charge. The extended-range battery can go up to 300 miles on a charge. Another appealing aspect of this model is its ability to serve as a backup generator, providing the electricity needed by the average household for up to three days.
Interior
The Ford F-150 Lightning cabin also shares similarities with the gas-powered model. The base trim comes standard with cloth upholstery and manual climate control, as well as a 12-inch touch screen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration, a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot, and integrated navigation. The large touch screen connects to Ford's high-end SYNC 4 infotainment system. Optional upgrades include a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system and a 15-inch touch screen.
Safety Features
Across the board, this pickup truck comes with Ford Co-Pilot360, which is Ford's suite of active safety features. It bundles pre-collision assist, intelligent adaptive cruise control, a rearview camera, lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
If you want even more features, consider adding the optional BlueCruise semi-autonomous driving mode. When you switch the truck into this mode, the system handles the acceleration, steering, and braking, which can improve long drives on straight stretches of road. BlueCruise includes cameras to monitor the driver and ensure that they remain attentive and seated in the driver's seat.
